History:
There were girls. There were always girls, but she’s who he prayed to, when he prayed, before he took the stage and before he left it, every time he prayed to her he did so without knowing who she was, without knowing even that he was praying. It came to him years later, as he stood over his friend’s newly dug grave that he had done so, that he had always been praying to her and would continue to do so until he joined his friend in the ground. He was thinking this as he held the runner of the casket in his sweaty fist, as he and the others in the group carried their bass player to the hole in the ground, as one of them slipped a little, the boardwalk had been shoddily laid, it was like a painter’s scaffold along the edge of the grave and one concrete block was lower than the other and at an angle and the board was wobbly, and the singer missed his footing and the sweat of his hand helped to grease things along, and there was a moment when the singer almost went down with the bass player, but the drummer took his arm, the drummer pulled the singer out of the bass player’s hole and the rest of the men and the guitar player pulled the bass player out of his hole and held him steady. It was not time yet for the dead bass player to lie down. First someone must say some words. First someone with authority over these matters must stand forth and speak.
